PLEASE JOIN US AND THE ARTIST FOR THE OPENING RECEPTION OF
YAO HAI: 'BEYOND BOUNDARIES'
Saturday, December 3, 15:00-18:00
Yao Hai, The Structure of Time, 2016, Installation, Dimension variable
K11 is proud to present 'Beyond Boundaries', a solo exhibition of Yao Hai curated by Lei Qifa which presents his new works created during his residency at K11 art village. The exhibition featuring 7 installations and 2 videos will be opened with reception and panel discussion on December 3 and will continue through December 31, 2016.
The interaction between 'the self', 'energy field', and 'choice of mediums', is an iconic reflection of Yao Hai's artistic approach. The three are considered to be interchangeable, interdependent, and interrelated. Together they form a powerful field of energy and visual cognition. As a result, it has become a medium by which Yao Hai explores the mysterious boundary between an individual as an energy unit and the energies existing in the surrounding environment.
Yao Hai, Waiting in Hope to Break the Code, 2016, Installation, 105 X 225 X 20cm
From 'Being Bright and Fresh Are Unnecessary', 'The Structure of Time', to 'Waiting in Hope to Break the Code', 'Mountains Are Not Mountains', these new works emphasize black, white and grey hues, irregular shapes in composition, implicit and explicit pulse, a state between thoughtful and thoughtless, and, a strong melodic sense. These works give us an interpretation that is both poetic and philosophical. They advertise that visual cognition and the desire of power exist not just in the individual but in the materialistic world as a whole.
The exhibition space is constructed in a way to immerse audience to a 'Beyond Boundaries' space. The intentional viewing path is carefully designed by the curator. When walking through the configured space progressing towards the video projection in the dark room, audience is set to experience the boundary between a juxtaposing and overlapping reality and illusion, almost in a state of dreaming.
The name of the exhibition 'Beyond Boundaries' comes from a dialogue between the artist and the curator for a greater clarity of the works. It embodies Yao Hai's artistic approach that is to explore the self, as an energy unit, and its underlying relationship with the surroundings.
